MT WASHINGTON VALLEY’S GRAND AND BABY GRAND HOTELS 

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Mt Washington Valley was well known for its Grand Hotels, serving guests in luxurious style.  One by one they were either destroyed by fire or lack of care, and most fell to ruin.  However, a few very special places have been restored to their grand elegance, and remain today as a reminder of the grandeur and quality of detail from yesteryear.  

Grand Hotels, larger in size, include the Omni Mount Washington Resort and the Omni Bretton Arms Inn (which recently completed a $1 million renovation) in Bretton Woods, a resort hotel, conference center, spa, golf course and recreational complex all in one.  Once the location for the establishment of our currency as we know it today (chosen given its remote and secure location for world leaders to gather), the Bretton Woods Agreement was signed here in the gold room which is still preserved as a reminder of the legacy of this location.  

The Mountain View Grand, another in the collection of Grand Resort Hotels located in Whitefield, NH, also offers world-class accommodations, a full-service spa, golf course, restaurants and fabulous mountain views, not to mention access to plenty of White Mountains recreation.  Meticulously brought back to life after decades of abandonment, the Mountain View Grand is another example of grand history preserved in a historic hotel. 

Yet, in the historic heyday of the early 1900s, a number of smaller Grand Hotels dotted the lodging scene, offering a mountain respite from the city.  Two of these “baby grands” have been meticulously restored and continue their legacy of providing memorable vacations steeped in White Mountain recreation.  The Wentworth, An Elegant Country Inn, is a complex of country inn, luxury suites, townhomes and golf course surrounding quintessentially New England Jackson Village.  Drive through the historic covered bridge, dubbed “the kissing bridge” for honeymooners who’d steal a kiss under the cover of the roof, and you’ll soon arrive at The Wentworth.  Home to Mt Washington Valley’s only four-diamond restaurant, guests are bathed in elegance from the moment they enter the grand lobby.  The Wentworth’s restaurant has been named The Most Romantic Restaurant by diners of Open Table. 

Just up the hill, the Eagle Mountain House’s front porch overlooking the Eagle Mountain Golf Club and mountains beyond, is a reminder of days gone by.  The rocker-filled porch is the first glimpse into the R&R offered here.  Add to that its own golf course, which becomes a XC ski mecca in the winter, restaurant, pool and lovely suites and rooms, and another Baby Grand is born.  

While history is beautifully preserved in Mt Washington Valley’s Grand and Baby Grand hotels, modern amenities from whirlpool tubs and private fireplaces to wi-fi and flat screen TVs still serve today’s travelers’ needs.  All the modern amenities travelers seek are seamlessly blended with elegant architectural touches preserved to pay homage to the grand lodging scene of yesteryear.
