White Mountains NEMBA is also a resource for planning a mountain biking adventure in Mt. Washington Valley. This local chapter of the New England Mountain Biking Association provides trailhead access and parking suggestions for those looking to ride throughout the valley.

For families and individuals looking for lift-serviced mountain biking trails, Cranmore Mountain Resort offers a mountain biking park with all-ability terrain, along with choice trails that provide more technical, single-track terrain. Small group and family lessons are also available for those looking to dip their toe in the water of mountain biking.

While not lift serviced, Bretton Woods opens its expansive Valley Trail Mountain Biking System network to mountain bikers. With views of the Presidential Range, bikers can rent equipment in two, four and eight hour intervals. Mountain biking at Bretton Woods is family friendly and available to multiple levels of ability.

Great Glen Trails is perfect for a day of family riding. It is home to a 25-mile network of carriage roads that offer riding for all abilities, and single wooden tracks for those looking for a bit more of a challenge. Mountain bike equipment rentals and day passes are available for purchase, and Great Glen Trails offers a kid’s scavenger hunton its grounds to connect them with nature. Great Glen Trails offers special events such as the “24 Hours of Great Glen” mountain biking event and its Summer Mountain Biking Series that individuals and families can participate in every Tuesday, June through August.

 

ROAD BIKING IN MT. WASHINGTON VALLEY, NH

Cyclists who plan to pack their bike for their Mt. Washington Valley vacation should consider joining  the Mount Washington Valley Bicycling Club for access to its guided rides. Hosted regularly throughout biking season to its members this group welcomes riders to join its rides for a local’s perspective on where to ride in the valley. By joining you’ll find new routes to ride the next time you visit the valley, that take you from Fryeburg to Conway, and up to Gorham, NH by following a network of roads that provides rolling hills, steep elevation climb, or miles of road that tests a rider’s endurance. Casual rides that keep a pace that would allow you to carry a conversation are also offered.

For a family of riders looking for a track that is contained, and away from traffic, Fryeburg, Maine offers the Mountain Division Trail. This eight-mile paved path runs from the Visitor Center, just minutes from the NH state line on route 302. It’s relatively flat, with only two small inclines that present shortly after leaving the visitor center. 

This is a perfect trail for a group with small children, a family with varied ages and abilities, and individuals looking for a very leisurely ride. 

Avid road bike riders and competitive sports enthusiasts can challenge themselves to an array of competitive events focused on challenging hill climbs and long distances throughout the valley; many of which support fundraising efforts for valley non-profits. Crank the Kanc is a timed trial 21.3 mile race on the Kancamagus Highway. It’s presented by the Mount Washington Valley Bicycling Club and Kennett High School Mountain Biking Team. 

Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hill Climb in support of Tin Mountain Conservation Center. Cyclist climb the 7.6 mile road up Mount Washington and face elvation gain of over 4,000 feet.
