CHARITY ON THE SLOPES IN MT WASHINGTON VALLEY
Fundraising for fabulous causes is the name of the game for the next two weeks
North Conway, NH – From events to make wishes come true to pro-style GS legacy races, the next two weeks in Mt Washington Valley will be highlighted by several fundraising events to benefit local skiers, ski programs and non-profits. Skiers will race, ski and ride to help raise funds for worthy causes throughout Mt Washington Valley’s ski resorts and XC Centers. Here’s a rundown of the charity events taking place on Mt Washington Valley’s trails and slopes in the next few weeks.
Now through March 24: Win a ski package and help Laura Foundation: The Conway Area Lions Club is holding a raffle with an amazing Rossi Ski Package (skis, bindings & poles) from Stan & Dan Sports. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20 and it benefits the Laura Foundation. Go to TheLauraFoundation.organd click the Pay Pal Button. Put your name, town and phone number in under Special Instructions. Drawing is March 24, 2018.
March 10: 2nd Annual Winter Charity Day at Great Glen Trails: Make a minimum donation of $25 per person ($15 ages 5-12) to the charity of your choice and enjoy free skiing, tubing, snowshoeing and a buffet lunch (11:30 am - 1:00 pm). Kids under 5 participate free with each donating adult. Make a minimum donation of $50 per person ($30 ages 5-12) to the charity of your choice and enjoy free skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, a buffet lunch and a ride on the Mt. Washington SnowCoach to treeline on the Auto Road. The first 32 people who make a $50 donation will receive a SnowCoach ticket for that day. Complete info here.
March 10: Ability Plus Ski-a-thon at Attitash: Raffle, après entertainment, silent auction, and various other activities presented by the Ability Plus of Mount Washington Valley take place 9:00-4:00pm. Proceeds help fund programs for handicapped skiers. Info here.
March 10: Mary’s Firemen for a Cure at Shawnee Peak: Sign up your five-member fireman team and you get: a lift ticket, chili lunch, and a t shirt if you register in advance. Registration begins at 2:00pm. The Firemen's Race begins at 3:00pm. Teams of five firemen in full turn-out gear race down the mountain while carrying a 50ft length of hose. Not a Firefighter? Introducing the first annual Devin's Downhill, an individual race and registration is only $10! Best of all the proceeds go to help fight Breast Cancer and pediatric brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). More info here.
Sunday, March 11: 18th Annual Marky B Boardfest at King Pine: The 18th annual snowboard race in memory of Mark Bierweiler is the most unique snowboard-only event in the region. It’s a slalom race through a course with hits, rolls and jumps. Funds generated from the race will aid and further support the snowboard programs at King Pine. More info here.
March 11: Shawn Smith Ski For Youth Fundraiser Family Fun GS Race at Attitash: This is the first of two scheduled fundraisers. If you do not ski, that is okay, you can still attend and enjoy being a part of this great fundraiser event at Attitash's Ptarmigan's Pub (11-4) for silent auctions, raffles, tee shirt sales along with the annual golf ball throw! Proceeds help local young Valley skiers in need due to hardships or injuries. Registration starts at 8:00am. GS Race on Spillway at 11:00am. Info here.
March 12: 15th Annual 100,000 Vertical Foot Challenge: The Wildcat Mountain 100,000 Vertical Foot Challenge is a non-race event offering the chance for a limited capacity field of participants the opportunity to ski or ride 100,000 vertical feet in a single day. Total funds raised from the previous 14 years of the event have reached over $921,000 directly benefiting Make-A-Wish® New Hampshire and their endeavors. The goal this year, in the 15th year of the event, is to reach and surpass $1 million in total dollars raised! Participants are required to raise a minimum of $250 for Make-A-Wish New Hampshire. Donated prizes from event sponsors will be awarded for the top fundraisers and additional prizes will be won in a bib draw raffle. Refreshments and snacks will be provided to help keep challengers going throughout the day. here is a 9-hour window, weather and conditions permitting, to complete the 100K, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (unless all participants still entered complete the 100K prior to 4:30 p.m. $75 registration fee. March 16: 45th Annual Red Parka Challenge Cup at Attitash Mountain Resort: The Challenge Cup is the longest-running, pro-style dual giant slalom ski race in the United States. Considered the premier New England Amateur ski race, the RPP Challenge Cup attracts some of the best racers in the region. All proceeds from the race benefit the Eastern Slopes Ski Club, a local organization that funds youth skiing in the Mt. Washington Valley. New this year to the race is the “Bump it Up” initiative, challenging teams and individual racers to raise funds independently to help reach the goal of $15,000. The race is open to men and women who are of at least 21 years of age. Info: http://www.redparkapub.com/.
Friday-Saturday, March 16-17: Cynthia’s Challenge at King Pine: Cynthia's Challenge, a 24-hour Ski-A-Thon, is set to take place Friday, March 16 at 4:00 pm. through Saturday, March 17 at 4:00pm. All funds raised with this year's event will benefit Freedom, New Hampshire's Jacques Villeneuve, a 9-year-old boy who was born missing the main wiring between the left and right hemispheres of his brain, called Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum. He has also been diagnosed with Diplegic Spastic Cerebral Palsy, an intellectual disability which poses both physical and mental challenges. Jacques' parents must physically lift him into their vehicle every time they plan on going anywhere and then have to have enough room for storage for his walking assistance devices. This year's goal is to raise $65,000 to purchase Jacques' family a wheelchair accessible van. Complete info here.
