MARCH & APRIL MEAN SPRING SKIING AND WELCOME TO MUD SEASON IN MT WASHINGTON VALLEY
It’s been a wild ride of a winter, with Mother Nature not sure whether it’s March or July! We’re ready for some real spring skiing, and that’s what’ll be offered up this year from Mt Washington Valley’s 13 ski resorts and XC Centers. Check out all the great events in store for March and April this spring.
Wed & Saturday throughout March: Free Waxing Clinic at Jackson XC, noon – 1pm: Sessions take place in the touring center and are hands-on where participants learn how to maintain waxless and waxable skis - Classic and Skate. March 1: Murder and Mayhem in NH at White Birch Books: Come at 5:00pm to hear from three murder mystery authors with stories based in New Hampshire. March 4: New England Ski Day at Shawnee Peak: Purchase your ticket to ski or ride all day and night on Friday, March 4th for just $29 with the presentation of your New England driver’s license. March 5, 12, 19: Cranapalooza at Cranmore: Enjoy a DJ in Schneider Square, dance parties with C-More the Penguin, outdoor games and entertainment, tubing races, giveaways, s’mores and more! Info: www.cranmore.com.
March 5: Cardboard Box Race at Shawnee Peak: Keep those big cardboard boxes on hand for the 3rd annual cardboard box race! Prizes awarded to the fastest and best dressed. Them is NASCAR. Register up to 4 people per team by 11:30am, race is at 1:00pm. All participants must have a lift ticket or season pass and be wearing a helmet. March 5: Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon: Staged between the historic Mount Washington Hotel and majestic Mount Washington, the Bretton Woods Nordic Marathon at Omni Mount Washington Resort this 42-kilometer, classic format, cross country ski race showcases a course challenging layout yet enjoyable for skiers of all abilities. March 6: Valley Ms. Pageant: Mount Washington Valley Promotions will host this fundraiser at M&D Productions. Women of all ages will represent their non-profit organization for the chance to win $500 for that charity. March 6: 42nd Annual Mt Washington Cup Nordic Race at Bretton Woods XC: This 10 km freestyle (skate/ ski) race which is part of the ZAK Cup Series. March 11-13: 20th Annual Hannes Schneider Meister Cup: The Hannes Schneider Meister Cup is unlike any ski race in history. It combines the best of skiing today with the warm nostalgia of yesterday. It honors the founding father of ski instruction, Austrian Hannes Schneider, who brought his world-renowned skills to North Conway and Mt. Cranmore in 1939. March 12: Mattress Race at Shawnee Peak: Design and decorate your old twin, full, double, queen or king, race it down our course and you'll be eligible for a brand-new queen-sized mattress from Americas Mattress & Furniture Gallery - Value: $999! Mattress Prize goes to the fastest mattress. There is also a prize for the best, most uniquely-decorated mattress. The race course will be set up on the Main Slope. Registration is $5/mattress. March 13: Princess Academy: Open to girls from toddler up to grade 6 on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at Theater in the Wood, in Intervale, this is a fund-raising event for the scholarship fund of the Miss MWV Teen Scholarship Program. Learn everything from how to walk on stage to make-up and hair plus photo ops with Miss Teenage Mt Washington Valley. Princesses will be invited to participate in the opening production of the evening program at the April 10, 2016 Miss Mount Washington Valley Teen Event. Spectators: $5 at the door.
March 13: Shannon Door Parade and Treasure Hunt at Black Mountain: Kids dress up in their best green and parade down the mountain, then hunts for treats at the bottom. Info: Click here.
March 13: Ski, Shoe & Fatbike to the Clouds at Great Glen Trails: Starting at 10:00am, during this famed race, participants pursue a 10km Cross Country Ski, snowshoe & fatbike race. It starts with 4km at the base on Great Glen Trails Nordic system and then heads up to the finish at treeline on Mt Washington. Registration fee: $25. Limited to 150 athletes. March 14: The Wildcat Mountain 100,000 Vertical Foot Challenge: This is a non-race event offering the chance for a limited capacity field of participants the opportunity to ski or ride 100,000 vertical feet in a single day. Total funds raised from the previous 12 years of the event have exceeded over $750,000 directly benefiting Make-A-Wish® New Hampshire and their endeavors. The event is unique to Wildcat Mountain coupling the accessibility of the Wildcat Express high-speed, summit lift and the ski area’s greater than 2,000 vertical feet. March 18: 43rd Annual Red Parka Challenge Cup Race: This is the longest running dual slalom, pro-style format race in the country, held at Attitash Mountain Resort. The best amateur racers from all over New England will compete and all skiers 21+ are welcome to participate. All proceeds benefit the Eastern Slope Ski Club Jr Ski Program. The $65 entry gets you a lift ticket, Race hat, awards party and the chance to race against the best. Both men and women skiers are welcome to compete. March 18-19: Cynthia’s Challenge for Kevin at King Pine: This24-hour Ski-a-Thon will be held at King Pine on March 18-19, 2016 from 4pm to 4pm. This year's goal is set to raise $45,000 for Kevin's family to purchase a wheelchair accessible van for Kevin, born premature with Cerebral Palsy. Registration is $99 per person - form a team of 5 and the 5th person is free and children 8 and under are free! The ticket includes dinner, breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the night, t-shirt and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the night plus 24 hours of skiing on March 18-19 from4pm to 4pm. March 19: March Maple Madness: Embarking on a self-guided inn-to-inn tour, ticket holders will sample tasty delights both savory and sweet and collect recipes can be found in a keepsake booklet included in the ticket price. Traveling through the White Mountains there will be opportunities to visit several “Sugaring” locations to experience the maple syrup process first hand, uncover clues, gather objects for the Scavenger Hunt all in an effort to complete the Maple Madness March. The ticket holder who, in the opinion of the panel of judges of dubious distinction, best accomplishes every dictate, and so scores the most points, will win the grand prize. March 19: Shawnee Peak 32nd Annual Spring Fling: The 32nd Annual Spring Fling promises to be a day of sun, fun, music and lots of laughs! Welcome Spring with the Slush Cup pitting skiers and snowboarders against a 100-foot-long man-made pond of ice cold water. Skim along as far as you can go, before falling victim to the laws of gravity! Register (for free) in the base lodge from 11am-11:30am. March 20: Cold River Radio Show: This New England based radio variety show feature the Connor Garvey Band and other local musicians, performances and storytellers, hosted by Jonathan Sarty and the Cold River Band at the Held at Theatre in the Woods, 41 Observatory Way in Intervale, NH at 7 p.m. Tickets available at J-Town Deli, White Birch Books or at the door the night of the show. March 20: Mountain Mush & Mascot Jam at Cranmore: Rather than dogs, this event uses people to pull the sleds to raise money for Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation. Registration at 1pm at the Base of North Slope, race starts at 2pm. 6 person teams $60 per team. Also, mascots from all around will compete for the crown in tubing, mountain coaster and dance off competitions starting at noon. Meet the mascots at Schneider Square. March 26: Bretton Woods Beach Party: 29th Annual Beach Party at Bretton Woods with spring skiing, live island music, BBQ, & après fun! Don’t forget about the annual Slush Pool event, complete with rubber duckies. Wear your beach gear and ski and ride for just $30! March 26: Spring Splash at Cranmore: This fun and FREE event is open to skiers and riders off all ages... as long as you don't mind getting a little wet, or SOAKED! Registration 9:00-11:00am, event starts at noon. Lift ticket or season pass and a parent or guardian signature if you're under 18 years old required. Prizes go to the best skim and best splash for ages 16 and up and 15 and under, and best costume. For safety reasons, all skimmers must go solo. Info: Click here.
March 26-27: Easter in the Mountains at Bretton Woods: Look for the Easter Bunny on skis, throughout Saturday and Sunday. Attend an Easter Tea Party at the Omni Mt Washington Hotel on Saturday with refreshments and crafts, then on Sunday, enjoy an Easter Brunch at the hotel then take in the Easter Egg Hunt at noon on the trails at Bretton Woods. March 27: Easter Sunday at King Pine: Ride the chairlift to the top of King Pine for a sunrise Easter service. Then ski down for Easter Brunch at Traditions Restaurant. Easter Egg hunt at the top of Pokey Pine at 2pm. Plus Skiers and riders attempt to cross the man-made shark-pond at the base of King Pine on the final day of the season. Hawaiian shirts recommended! March 30: Feast of the Valley: The Kennett High School Key Club, along with Valley Originals and the ProStart Culinary Program, have scheduled the Feast of the Valley Buffet at the Kennett High School cafeteria. The event, including a social hour, will run from 5:30 - 8 PM that evening. Proceeds will benefit the ProStart Culinary Program at Kennett High School and Key Club's childrens charities. April 3: 3rd Annual Cat Scratch Fever Mogul Freeride at Wildcat: Participate and shred in this feature spring mogul event taking place in The Chutes at the base of Wildcat Mountain or watch and cheer on competitors and sway the judges scores from easy vantage points located at the Bobcat Base Lodge or from the decks of the Main Base Lodge. April 9: Tuckerman Inferno Pentathlon: The Tuckerman Inferno adventure race started in 2000 as the annual fundraiser for the Friends of Tuckerman Ravine. The race pays homage to the original American Inferno ski races of the 1930’s. While the classic American Infernos were top to bottom ski races only, the Tuckerman Inferno now includes running, kayaking, biking, hiking and skiing to create a pentathlon event that is one of the most challenging adventure races in the country. Individuals and relay teams of up to five people compete to see who will be the fastest to cover an approximately 36-mile course that starts in the Mount Washington Valley and finishes in Tuckerman Ravine. Friday, April 22: Earth Day at Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm: A full "Earth Day" of hands on family friendly events will focus in on the role Mother Earth has played in our lives then and now.
April 24: Funergy Festival: 4 Our Kids Recycling Services will present the Funergy Festival, with exhibits and educational displays focused on clean energy and recycling at North Conway Community Center.
