Calling all New England meteorologists to the Second Annual Meteorologists Weekend in Mt Washington Valley, March 19 & 20TH, 2016

The Mt Washington Valley Chamber has teamed up with the Mount Washington Observatory to provide a learning weekend with a little fun in the mountains thrown in, March 19-20, 2016.  Together, we plan to present an AMS- approved 4-C.E.U. practitioners’ workshop for all New England meteorologists, coupled with a day of skiing, snowshoeing, winter sightseeing, receptions and maybe even a little shopping too. 

Mark the Calendar for March 19 – 20, 2016!  Highlights will include:

  • An AMS- approved 4-C.E.U. practitioners’ workshop offered by the Mount Washington Observatory at the Weather Discovery Center in North Conway, NH.
  • A meteorologists reception
  • A day in the mountains including skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, Mountain Coasters, SnowCoach Winter Sightseeing Tours for all meteorologists and one guest.
  • A special meteorologists-only lodging rate of $99 per night in North Conway, NH

The Schedule:

Saturday, March 19:

 11:00am/Weather Discovery Center: The Mount Washington Observatory will present an AMS- approved 4-C.E.U. practitioners’ workshop. Mountain Meteorology & Forecasting offered by Observatory Summit Staff Mike Carmon, Kaitlyn O’Brien, Tom Padham, Ryan Knapp, Mike Dorfman, will delve into the extreme weather observed atop Mount Washington, NH (KMWN). Included will be a discussion about various meteorological phenomena specific to mountainous regions and how real-time observations and identified trends are integrated into the forecasting process.

1:00pm:  Light lunch and break

 2:00pm/Weather Discovery Center:  An afternoon module on History of Climate Change in the White Mountain Region will be presented by Brian Fowler, P.G., President & Life Trustee, Mount Washington Observatory. This session will explain the basics of glaciological processes and their residual effects. The difference between climate signatures measured by proxy versus those measured by instrumental observation will also be discussed. This session will conclude with a sequential examination of surficial geologic proxies for regional climate change 18,000 BP to Present.

 4:00 – 6:00pm/Weather Discovery Center:  Reception for Meteorologists and their guests presented by Valley Originals restaurants, Mt Washington Valley.  Family members and guests may join you and will enjoy participating in the hands-on exhibits while sampling foods from restaurants throughout Mt Washington Valley. Beer provided by local breweries.

 Optional snowmaking and/or grooming demonstrations.  Be a snowmaker or groomer for the night alongside mountain crews.

Sunday, March 20:

Sign up ahead of time for complimentary*:

  • Skiing (rentals not included) compliments of Mt Washington Valley ski resorts
  • Snowshoeing compliments of Mt Washington Valley XC Centers
  • Tubing/mountain coasters compliments of Cranmore Adventure Park
  • SnowCoach Tour up Mt Washington, compliments of Great Glen Trails/Mt Washington Auto Rd.

* Each meteorologist may enjoy these activities with one guest. Additional guests may be charged for these activities.

 Fees:

 The cost of the weekend including all educational programming, lunch and reception on Saturday, and all recreational activities for Sunday is $295 per meteorologist.  Each meteorologist is invited to bring one guest, included in the fee for the weekend.  Additional fees for recreation may apply to additional guests.

 The Mt Washington Valley Accommodations Group has generously offered a $99 rate for rooms on March 19 or 20 at Eastern Slope Inn or Oxen Yoke Motel, both within walking distance of the Weather Discovery Center.
