Fill up your calendar with snowshoeing events throughout March

Snowshoeing in the Mt. Washington Valley is exploding this month. Perfect for families looking to enjoy an activity together,  a couple looking to spend some quality time with one another or friends looking to learn something new, any one of the snowshoe events listed below will help you add a whole new element of fun to your Mt. Washington Valley getaway.

Great Glen Trails is ground zero for  outdoor fun in Pinkham Notch. With an array of events focused on the great outdoors, the Starlit Snowshoe Tour in particular is a wonderful option for those looking for some on snow evening adventure. From 7:00pm to 8:30pm experience the wonder of a night time winter walk in the woods. Join an Appalachian Mountain Club Naturalist on a guided snowshoe walk where you will use your senses to navigate the trails while listening for owls calling and more. Perfect to pair with dinner out, enjoy a great meal at a local restaurant before this program and then make your way to the outdoor center for a 7:00pm start time. The next tour is March 7th. Registration is $12.00 per person or $35.00 per family of four or more and children under 12 are free. Rentals are available for an additional $10.00 fee. Did you know that Jackson Ski Touring Foundation  (JSTF) was rated the number one best snowshoeing center in the country for families by Snowshoeing Magazine? JSTF invites you to join local historian and naturalist Peter Minnich for a two hour guided snowshoe tour. Offered every Tuesday from 1:00 to 3:00pm, every Saturday at 10am and 1pm and every Sunday at 10 am, you’ll be able to find a tour that fits into your schedule.  JSTF tours are $10.00 and include insider tips from your guide who will reveal hot spots along the trails that most people would never get to find. This is a fun and interesting way to enjoy a day out on the trails and learn fun outdoor and nature-based anecdotes for your next story around the water cooler.

Join Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring Foundation any Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm for a guided snowshoe walk along the East Branch and Saco rivers. This is a great way to try this winter activity or enjoy it from a whole new perspective if you’re a seasoned snowshoer. Tours last between one and half to two hours, covering a distance of less than two miles at an easy pace suitable for all ages and abilities. Snowshoes are available for rent at the Touring Center. To reserve your spot in the upcoming March 7th or 14th tours, call the Touring Center at 603-356-9920 and plan to meet there soon after 12:30pm.

Bretton Woods offers snowshoeing on the grounds of the historic Omni Mount Washington Resort. Enjoy trekking on the groomed Nordic trail system as you take in the panoramic views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range. You can also explore the trails that follow along the Amonoosuc River, or trek over the high-country snowshoe trails along the ridge-line of the Bretton Woods Mountain Resort for a higher elevation adventures. Join a professional guide for a snowshoe expedition where you will get some exercise, get off the beaten path, and discover the wonders of winter. The guide will pick a nearby hike based on conditions and group ability and you will learn about winter backcountry safety and equipment and enjoy stunning mountain scenery. Tours last approximately two hours and include showshoe rentals. These expeditions are offered daily at 10:00am and 1:00pm and are $55.00 per person to register. If you’re more interested in a leisurely snowshoe tour with friends and family, Purity Spring XC and Snowshoe Reserve and Bear Notch Ski Touring Foundation also offer snowshoe rentals and beautiful scenery too.

At Bear Notch Ski Touring Center you’ll delight in spectacular riverside views, pristine waterfalls and picturesque flat meadows. And depending on what kind of adventure you’re looking for, you’ll also come upon challenging hills. The touring center also offers a welcoming warming hut with warm soup, hot chocolate and other beverages and snacks as a great resting point on your winter snowshoe adventure. Best of all, dogs are welcomed on the trails here, so plan to bring Fido along for some outdoor fun on the trails too.

Purity Spring Resort also offers a trek by the on-site NH Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. You’ll be taken on a tour through quiet forests and passing by a pristine lake for a complete outdoor adventure.
