More than one way to get up and down the mountain at Mt Washington Valley ski resorts

FINDING UNIQUE WINTER FUN ON THE SLOPES
Mt. Washington Valley has earned its share of kudos over the last few years, including being rated by National Geographic as a “Top Skiing Destination in the World” and a spot on Lonely Planet’s “Top Ten Places to Visit in 2015,” in part due to the huge variety of things to do for every age and interest. Ski resorts and outdoor/adventure centers are always coming up with new and exciting ways to help you create memories with your families, try new activities and ultimately, have more fun on the snow. Why not plan your next Mt Washington Valley winter trip around one of these unique programs?
While skiing and riding is one on-snow focus here, you can also feel the swish and crunch of snow underfoot by renting a Fat Bike at Great Glen Trails for the day. Fat Bikes consist of regular recreational bicycles with tires that are wider than 3.7 inches and a tire of less than 10 psi. Great Glen Trails has fat bike rentals available through a partnership with Stan and Dan Sports or you can bring your own fat bike to use on their trail network system. An afternoon trail pass is $15.00 if you have your own bike, or fat bike rentals are $20.00 for two hours. Trail passes are available for purchase on Sunday afternoons from 12:30 – 4pm, on the first and last Sundays of the month. Dates include, January 25th, February 1st & 22nd and March 1st and 15th.
Ski or ride all day at Cranmore Mountain Resort in North Conway Village, and if you still have some energy, keep the fun going at the Cranmore Adventure Park. The park is also ideal for the family or group who has some skiers/riders plus others who’d rather find another way to go up and down the mountain. The Cranmore Adventure Park was rated “ Number 3 in the East for off-hill activities at a mountain” by Ski Magazine. Take a ride on the giant swing, which features a four seat swing, where friends and family can launch from high in the sky and swing back and forth for a thrilling ride. Guests can purchase individual Giant Swing tickets for $13.00 per person. For those looking for more time in the park can purchase a pass for unlimited mountain adventure including access to the Giant Swing, the Soaring Eagle Zip Line, Mountain Coaster and a two hour tubing package for $45.00 per person.
For those seeking some extreme adventure and big air thrills, Attitash Mountain Resort hosts an “Attitash Freeride Series” on specific Saturdays each month throughout the winter season. The Attitash Freeride Series consists of five events, including two Rail Jams, Big Air Competition, Slopestyle Competition and a Skier/Boarder X. All ages are welcome to compete in these events. It is $10.00 to enter each event and prizes are awarded to the top three male and female competitors in each division. Upcoming Freeride Series events include a Rail Jam on January 17th, the Slopestyle competition on February 14th, the Big Air Competition on February 21st and with what Attitash calls “one of its most exciting events of the season,” the USASA Skier/Boarder X event on March 1st.
Attitash is also hosting a 50th Birthday Bash on Jan. 26th. Come celebrate and party in Ptarmigan’s Pub from 2 to 5 pm and enjoy live music from local favorites Shark Martin. Everyone attending will be entered in to free raffle where the mountain will be giving away 50 prizes to celebrate 50 years, including special Attitash 50th Anniversary t-shirts and one special Grand Prize. Free commemorative posters or this year’s special old logo die-cut stickers will be passed out as well to slap on your car or ski box if you haven’t picked one up already!
Shawnee Peak is hosting the second annual WHEB Huck off contest on Jan. 24. Join the mountain for an action packed contest as tubers “huck” themselves into the Big Air Bag in style. The Big Air Bag is an inflatable pillow that backs on to an 8 foot kicker. The Big Air Bag cushions your landing, deflates so you can exit after you land and then inflates for the next jumper. A Staff member will meet you at the top of the run and help you load into your tube and then tubers are set free to get massive air. Tickets may be purchased at the Ticket Booth or in Guest Services and are $12.00 for two “hits” and $15.00 for four “hits.”
Bretton Woods has mountains of fun – literally. Along with skiing and riding, this resort offers family-friendly activities for all ages. Right on the grounds of the ski resort, Bretton Woods has a kids snowmobiling park. Kids, 44 inches tall and weighing no more than 110 pounds, can rent “snowdeos”, complete with banked turns and a safety supervisor and full-face helmets, kids can zoom around the park to their heart’s desire. Tickets are $20.00 per person for a fifteen minute ride and this ticket also gives children access to the snow tubing carousel, mini zip line, playground set and other interactive toys in the nearby and complementary Kinderwoods Playground. This offer is open to resort guests and the public, 10-4:00pm, midweek.
The Bretton Woods Canopy Tour is also located on the grounds of the Bretton Woods Ski Resort. This three hour zipline tour lets adventure seekers descend over 1,000 feet from tree-top ziplines and platforms. Nine ziplines, two sky bridges and three rappels are all a part of the tour, offering a bird’s eye view of the White Mountains and the forest below. Canopy Tour tickets are $89.00 and include equipment. You can even combine your day of skiing with the resort’s Zip and Ski package for $99.00, which includes a lift ticket that can be used the day before, on or the day after your Canopy Tour is booked. Reservations should be made through the Canopy Tour office at 603-278-3335. This offer is available midweek and weekends.
Families can also enjoy the ease of planning an entire vacation at a single resort through all of the amenities King Pine Ski Area offers. The Tohko Dome outdoor skating rink is situated right across the street from the ski area. The rink opens at 8:30am daily and is complimentary to all Purity Spring Resort guests. Tickets for the public can be purchased for $4.00 mid-week and $6.00 on weekends. For those with a King Pine Ski Area lift ticket, access to the rink is complimentary. In the evening, the Tohko Dome is well-lit and remains open through 9:30pm midweek and 10:30pm on weekends and vacation periods.?Skate rentals are also available at the King Pine Rental shop.
King Pine also has a snowtubing park, where families can whiz down the mountain and race one another to the bottom. Tickets are just $18 per person for each 2-hour session. Tubes are provided by King Pine and the tubing park is open Friday evenings from 7-9:00pm and Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 10-4:00pm. Redeem their online coupon, for $10.00 off your tubing ticket on Friday nights.
Black Mountain is celebrating its 80th Season on the slopes with a wide array of fun events. On Tuesdays throughout the winter, (excluding Feb. 16) ladies can enjoy skiing at Black for only $25 with an added value of lunch for only an additional $10. Do you need a lesson? Black is offering discounted ski lessons just for ladies and providing child care. Be sure to make your child care reservation with 24 hour notice. Skiers 55 and older can also take advantage of Silver Fox Day on Thursdays, excluding Feb. 16, for $25.00.
During February Vacation week, on Feb. 17th, Wildcat Mountain is hosting the Kitty Litter Cardboard Box Race. This is a fun, free, February Vacation tradition for kids. Build your own “vessel” out of cardboard boxes and go head-to-head in a series of heats held at the base of Wildcat. Registration is free and the event begins at 2pm. The Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring and Snowshoe Foundation is gearing up for their 26th Annual Chocolate Festival on Feb. 22nd. Join fellow skiers, snowshoers and chocolate-lovers for a sweet combination of Nordic skiing throughout the North Conway and Intervale villages along with all varieties of chocolate from liquid to solid!
The Valley’s XC centers are excited to provide unique ways to have fun this winter with guided tours that can be enjoyed on the grounds of their resort. Jackson Ski Touring offers Snowshoeing Nature Tour series every Saturday. During this two hour instructional nature tour, your expert guide will introduce those on the tour to hidden places and gems along the trails and off the system. Your guides will also provide fun and interesting anecdotes as well as snowshoeing technique tips. The tour price is $10.00 and snowshoe rentals are available for $12.00. Reservations are suggested and tours begin at 10am and 1pm.
