 From the World Championships of Mud Football and the Tournament of Mud Parade to a 250th Birthday Bash for Fryeburg, ME, the calendar of events is packed with family fun in Mt Washington Valley, NH.  Now is the time to schedule an end-of-summer or early fall getaway to coincide with outdoor adventure and family fun.

Saturdays in Aug: Attitash Mountainside  Music Series: Each Saturday in August, catch the live bands at Attitash from 3- 6pm.  Each concert promises a rocking great time, rain or shine (rained out concerts will be held inside at Ptarmigans Pub). Every Sunday: The North Conway Farmers’ Market is the newest addition to the list of successful markets on the eastern side of the White Mountains. Taking place on Sundays at the North Conway Community Center, at the southern end of Schouler Park, the North Conway village market joins the Tamworth Farmers’ Market and the Local Works Berlin Farmers’ Marketplace to offer local vegetables, meats, cheeses, breads, entertainment and more.  Look for everything from grass-fed beef to pickled veggies and more.  Best of all, make it a family affair.  Parents can shop and the kids will love the Community Center playground next door!

Tuesdays in August: Tuesday is movie night at Settlers’ Green Each Tuesday through August at 7pm, catch your favorite family-oriented movie in an outdoor amphitheater set up on the green at Settlers’ Green Outlet Village.  Activities start at 7 p.m. A giant 16-foot movie screen and Blu-ray projector, comfy outdoor lounge chairs for the first 30 guests, ice cream and popcorn are all served up all on the lawn on a warm summer night!  Movies are free; family oriented, and start at dusk.  Here’s the schedule:

Wednesdays in August: Wednesday Science in the Mountain Series:  This free lecture series for your budding geologists and animal lovers takes place on six successive Wednesdays through August 21 at the Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center in North Conway.  From bats to black bear, the series will focus on a different topic each week.  All programs start at 7pm.  For a complete schedule, visit http://www.mountwashington.org/education/science_in_the_mountains/

Fridays in Aug, Sept, Oct: Foto Fridays on the Auto Road: An exclusive series of guided Adventure Photography Tours, led by renowned photographer Ernie Mills, is being offered on the slopes and summit of the Northeast’s highest Peak as well as other spectacular spots in Pinkham Notch every Friday through Oct 18, 2013. Tours are 3 hours in length and are being offered every Friday. Choose from either a Sunrise, Day time, Sunset tour or by request. The daytime tour typically involves optional hikes into the Alpine Garden about 3 miles round trip from the Auto Road. The Alpine Garden visit may not be suited to all guests due to the medium level of rocky hiking. Price: 12-17 yrs old $100, 18 and up $150 (not recommended for children under 12 years old). Aug 8: Arts Jubilee presents Symphony Pops at Cranmore: The 31st Arts Jubilee concert season will end with a “symphony pops” style performance with Clayton Poole and the New England Wind Symphony, This Broadway Classics concert will feature hits from over 20 Broadway shows with vocals by Patty Barkas. Dennis & Davey - whose music is known throughout the area as the next best thing to visiting the Emerald Isle – will open the concert with a 6pm pre-show. Arts Jubilee’s outdoor festival concerts are found at the base of the North Slope at Cranmore Mountain in North Conway, New Hampshire.  Headline concerts begin at 7:00 PM and a 'warm up' performance begins at 6 PM. Aug 10-11: 12/24 Hours of Great Glen: Serious and novice bikers will convene at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center in Pinkham Notch for the annual 24-hour mountain bike race wrapped into a weekend-long mountain bike festival. Hardcore racers tackle the single track and carriage roads. Families enjoy the festival games and 24 Minutes of Great Glen kids’ race. And everyone enjoys the atmosphere! This year's Beach Party theme will bring the ocean to the mountains, with everything from tropical themed costumes and activities to a floating, sectional pontoon bridge. Teams can enjoy this whirlwind for the full 24 hour classic or try the 12 hour version-there's even a "24 Minutes of Great Glen" race for the kids! Other activities planned for the weekend, include an evening bonfire and lots more going on under the festival tent, including catering by Moat Mountain and tunes by the Fwhatza Marimba Band. August 10: 25th Annual Wildman Biathlon: Celebrating a 25-year legacy, Wildcat Mountain’s Wildman Biathlon is a three-part running, bike, uphill run event for teams and individuals. The Wildman is New England's toughest single day, multi-sport event, challenging individuals and 2 or 3 person teams who enjoy a variety of terrain and scenery. T-shirts are offered to all participants with trophies awarded to overall and category winners along with the numerous prizes given away through random drawing. Aug 17-18: White Mountain Arts and Artisan Sale in Jackson: Experience the world of Art through the work of over 40 artists and artisans at the Annual White Mountain Art and Artisan Festival, a two-day juried event Saturday August 17th and Sunday August 18th in Jackson Village Park. The White Mountain Art and Artisan Festival is one of the Northeast's premier events for artists and artisans, and this year's juried exposition features works artists presenting sculpture, glass, wood furniture & arts, ceramics, fiber arts, fine arts and jewelry for sale at all price points. Live musical performances throughout the weekend will include Al & the Revtones and a local favorite Jazz Band known as “Calico Slim”. August 24:  Fryeburg Celebrates 250th Birthday: The town of Fryeburg, Oxford County’s oldest township, is celebrating its 250th birthday with a big bash on August 24th.  The celebration starts at 9am and goes all day long, concluding with a very special fireworks celebration.  There’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy from an Allagash Birthday Bash to fundraisers and even a Cow Patti Plop Game, the festivities take place at the Fryeburg Fair Grounds and the Good Beer Store. Aug 23-25: 25th Annual Mostly Bach Festival:  “The sights and sounds of J.S. Bach” kicks off the weekend with food, art, and a presentation by John Day, Director of the Pace Galleries of Art at the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center at Fryeburg Academy. The Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon concerts will include both instrumental and vocal music of the Baroque period involving small groups, soloists and the Bach Festival Chorus and Orchestra. Dr. Robert Lehmann, Director of String Studies, Associate Professor of Music and Artist Faculty in violin and viola at the University of Southern Maine School of Music will be welcomed back this year for his sixth season as the White Mountain Musical Arts Music Director, Festival Conductor and soloist. Aug 24: Wildcat Trail Turns 80:  In the summer of 1933, the depression era born Civilian Conservation Corps, armed with axes and cross-cut saws, started clearing the Wildcat Trail. It was one of the first ski racing trails built in the United States designed by Charley Proctor, the all-around ski champion of Canada in 1927, and was designated as a class "A" racing trail. To celebrate its history, Wildcat Mountain invites outdoor and ski enthusiasts alike to visit Saturday, August 24 to enjoy a day of guided hikes, tours, displays, BBQ, music, and more as it marks 80 years of the Wildcat Trail. Historical displays and information presented by the New England Ski Museum, Museum of the White Mountains and the U.S. Forest Service highlighting the Civilian Conservation Corps, their tools, history of the Wildcat Trail will be on display, noon to 3pm. August 25: Sunrise on Sunday on the Rock Pile: The third and last of this summer’s Sunday Sunrise openings on the Mt Washington Auto Road will take place on August 25 at 4:30 AM allowing guests to drive themselves to the summit of Mt. Washington to view the sunrise from the highest peak in the Northeast. September 6-8: Live, from North Conway's Hog Coliseum, it's “Muddy Night LIVE: Mud Bowl, the world championships of mud football, returns to North Conway's Hog to celebrate a theme that parodies some of the best skits from NBC-TV's “Saturday Night Live” program. From (land-) Mudsharks and Killer Bees, to Mud Gumbys, the Blues Brothers, and more, the weekend of fun, mud football and family entertainment. Great food, football toss games for kids and halftime musical skits also part of the fun.  This year celebrates the 31st annual “Tournament of Mud Parade.” Set for Saturday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. it proceeds from John Fuller Elementary School south down White Mountain Highway in North Conway Village and culminates with team float skits in front of the reviewing stand across from the Conway Scenic Railroad's North Conway Train Station. Then, ten teams from throughout New England play a good clean game of football in knee-deep mud in the 17-game, double-elimination tournament, culminating in the championship game on Sunday, Sept. 8. Teams are cheered on by squads of cheerleaders who vie all weekend for team spirit awards. Proceeds from the zany championships benefit charities in Mount Washington Valley. First held in a corn field in North Conway in 1976, the games have raised nearly $800,000 for charities over the years. Tickets are on sale in advance at the North Conway Community Center, Hannaford, The Met, the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce and North Conway Day Care. Three-day tickets serve as raffle prize entries. Three-day tickets are $10; day tickets are $6 ages 14 and up, and $4 ages 6 to 13; family tickets (two adults, two children) are $15 per day. September 6-8: Muster in the Mountains: This weekend long event is a colonial encampment of reactors representing various individuals of the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and Mountain Man periods from 1750 through 1840 at the Mt Washington Auto Road.  A great event for history buffs.  Info: http://mtwashingtonautoroad.com/events/muster-in-the-mountains/. 

September 7: Victorian Tea at Remick Country Dr Museum: Delight in tea cakes, fresh brewed English and herbal tea, and good company at the annual tea party in the lovingly restored Remick Family home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 2 pm to 4 pm. $12 per person, ages 16+. September 11:  America Supports You Freedom Walk: The America Supports You Freedom Walk is a national tradition that calls on people to reflect on the lives lost on September 11, 2001, remember those who responded, honor our veterans past and present, and renew our commitment to freedom and the values of our country. Each year the number of walks held throughout the nation grows, as more people are moved to participate. The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to participate in our solemn annual walk on September 11, 2013 at the Jackson Covered Bridge Route 16 side gathering at 5:00 PM.   Antique cars, fire trucks, pets, kids on skate boards, motor cycles, people in or on any kind of transportation are welcome to join us.  The walk will commence immediately following a few words from invited guests, a moment of silence, the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem (approximately 5:30 PM).  Immediately following the walk the Shannon Door Pub will open their doors to our Military, Police, Fire & Rescue personnel for complimentary pizza (please have your ID).  All others are invited to join in as well (food and libations priced according to the menu).  Info: www.jacksonnh.com/event/150/America-Supports-You---Freedom-Walk. 

Sept 14-15: Railfans Weekend at Conway Scenic RR: Train buffs – plan a trip to North Conway as we celebrate Railfans’ Weekend with two great days of railroading.  Special demos, freight cars, cabooses and other trains will be running along with Saturday and Sunday trips to the Notch and beyond.   The schedule includes a night photo shoot with professional photographers too.  Info: www.conwayscenic.com/?post_type=event. 

Sept 20-22: NH Highland Games and Festival:  The largest Scottish festival in the Northeast, this three-day gathering at Loon Mountain celebrates everything Scottish—food, music, culture, dancing, athletics, and more.! Watch the Gathering of the Scottish Clans, Massed Bands with over 500 pipes and drums; Sheepdog Trials; Celtic World Music Concerts; Scottish Fiddle Championship; Heavyweight Scottish Athletics; National Highland Dance Competition; Solo Piping & Drumming; Scottish Harp & more. Sept 21: Night Terrors 5K: This 5k adventure race will take you on a haunted run throughout Cranmore Mountain Resort. Don't fear, you will be helped along by the creators and cast of the Ghoullog.  Throw on a costume, lace up your running shoes and get ready to run for your life!  Prizes for the best costumes (group & individual), top male and female racers.  The first wave of runners is scheduled to start at 7:30pm. Sept 21: Walk for the Animals/Bark in the Park: Join the Conway Area Humane Society for the largest pet expo and event in the North Country, featuring demos, carnival games, dog show games, agility fun, vendors, raffles and more! The fun begins with the Walk for the Animals. Start early collecting your pledges either as a team or individually - there are great prizes for both categories. Create your personal pledge page on FIRSTGIVING and start fundraising for the animals. You may register for the walk Friday evening from 5 - 7 pm, or Saturday morning in the park beginning at 8:30 am. The walk begins at 9:30 through Whitaker Woods and will be followed by the awards to the top fundraisers. Following the Walk for the Animals is the Bark in the Park Pet Expo. 40+ vendors and sponsors will be on hand selling pet-related services and goods. The Main Event Ring will feature interactive games for you and your dog, and the carnival games will be ongoing all day where you can win prizes.
