MT WASHINGTON VALLEY SKI-VERSRIES, SKI FUN AND SNOW EVENTS IN JAN-FEB
From Chairlift Speed Dating to Chocolate Festivals and live entertainment, January and February offer events for all ages in Mt Washington Valley.
North Conway (1-10-13)– Named the most affordable ski destination in the Northeast for two years running by TripAdvisor, Mt Washington Valley’s value comes not only from the incredibly affordable dining, lodging and skiing, but also from a packed calendar of on-and-off-snow events. For those who love the outdoors, Mt Washington Valley’s 13 ski resorts and XC Centers pack the calendar of events with everything from Chocolate Festivals to Chairlift Speed Dating. Check out the line-up of weekly and one-time events taking place in Mt Washington Valley in January and February.
| Saturdays and Sundays, January-February: Live Entertainment at Lostbo Pub, Black Mountain: Finish a great day on the slopes warming up in the Lostbo Pub at the base of Black Mountain. Look for après ski specials with weekly live entertainment and beer promotions from 3:30pm-5:30pm. Relax in front of the giant windows and catch rays on the deck overlooking the mountain and horses. Check out Black Mountain’s calendar to see who is playing. Info: www.Blackmt.com. Saturdays at Cranmore in January & February: CRANAPALOOZA! A celebration of winter, skiing, fun, friends and family! Join in for s’mores roasting, face painting, and family fun. Fireworks will also be on Jan. 19th, Feb. 16th, Feb 23rd, and Mar. 2nd and will start at 6:30pm. Sundays throughout January & February: Ski with a Naturalist at Great Glen Trails: Each Sunday, take a lesson in nature at Great Glen Trails with the whole family: When you ski with an AMC naturalist, you will learn about the flora and fauna that make our corner of the world so special. You’ll scout for tracks in the snow and learn about the different trees in the Glen. You’ll listen for distinct bird calls. You’ll truly begin understand how the ecosystem works in Pinkham Notch. It takes place on Sundays 10:30 – 12 and is free with a trail pass. Saturdays in January & February: Kids Fun Run at King Pine: Practice your racing skills in the fun run which takes place at the bottom of the Open Slope. No entry fee but lift ticket required. Awards for winners. Click here for info. Saturdays & Sundays in January and February: Snowshoe Tour at Jackson Ski Touring: Enjoy a two-hour nature tour on snowshoes with an expert guide. Your guide will show you places along the trails and off the system that most people might never find. Friday Free Waxing Demos in January & February at Jackson Ski Touring: Eric's Awesome Waxing Demonstration takes place every Friday in the Touring Center and is hands on. Eric will teach you how to maintain waxless and waxable skis - Classic and Skate. Well maintained skis are more fun and easier to ski on. - Free! Info: 603-383-9355, www.jacksonxc.org. JANUARY January 12: Celebrate Cranmore’s 75th Anniversary: Cranmore Mountain Resort will celebrate their 75th anniversary at The Red Jacket Resort in North Conway, on Sat. January 12, 2013 at 5:30pm. Tickets for this event are now sold out. January 12-13: Shawnee Peak’s 75th birthday celebration: Shawnee Peak is 75 this year, which makes it the longest operating mountain in Maine. On-mountain events include an early morning balloon hunt with 75 balloons placed around the trails before opening, all with 2-for-1 tickets inside; giveaways in The Great Room on the hour from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm; a Cardboard Box Race at 2:00 pm; and a cocktail party in Blizzards Pub from 6:30 until 8:00 pm, followed by entertainment by the Kennebunk River Band in Blizzard's Pub starting at 8:00 pm. The evening will end with a torchlight parade and fireworks at 11:00 pm. More information can be found here. January 12: Attitash U Go Girl Race Series: Giant Slalom: Join in the fight against breast cancer at Attitash as they raise money in three-part race series this season. Half of the proceeds from the U Go Girl Race Series will benefit Jen's Friends Cancer Foundation an organization based in the Mt. Washington Valley that provides supplemental financial assistance and other resources to cancer patients and their families. The U Go Girl Race Series consists of three races, including two single giant slalom races, as well as a dual giant slalom. Female competitors of all ages can compete for points and placement. Males are welcome to race, but will not be placed. Entry to each race is $10 and half the proceeds go to Jen's Friends. For more information, go to http://www.attitash.com/u-go-girl-race-series.html. January 12: Biodiesel Day at Cranmore : Drive your hybrid to Cranmore for a free lift ticket and VIP Parking! January 13: TD Bank Kids Ski Fest: An EXTRA FUN day for kids at Great Glen Trails! Come join the fun from 9am to 4pm for winter fun on skis! Steve’s Awesome Obstacle Course, Team Sprint Relays, group games, treats to eat at the Cabin, a lollipop race for the youngest skiers are all on the schedule. Add in Great Glen’s every day offerings of the Trails Tracker creature hunt and snow tubing and you won’t want to leave! Mini-lessons will be offered in both morning and afternoon for first-time cross country youth skiers. Trail Pass required for adults and children at a reduced rate of $5. Activities and children’s rental equipment FREE. Rentals for participating parent/guardians: $10. January 21: Bretton Woods Geschmossel XC Ski Race: Originally staged during the winter of 1972-73, the Geschmossel is one of New England’s oldest citizens’ races. The race originated as a 6-kilometer fun race, and was groomed with a homemade track sled that was pulled by a rope from a grooming machine. This 15 km classical style Nordic ski race takes place this year on the Ammonoosuc trail network at the Bretton Woods Nordic Center, and has grown to attract high-level skiers including members of the United States Ski Team. January 27: Bretton Woods New England Womens Ski Day : Enjoy a fun day on the snow and experience cross-country ski clinics for every level of skier, from first-timers to seasoned masters at Bretton Woods Nordic Center. In addition to top-notch instruction, there will be wax demonstrations, fantastic prize and raffle drawings during lunch and at the wrap-up event. Clothing and equipment retailers will be on hand with items to try and buy; there will also be an exclusive sale with wine and/or beer tasting on Saturday evening with sale only lasting thru the weekend. January 26-27: Attitash Military Salute Weekend: Attitash and Wildcat will honor our nation’s defenders and their families with FREE lift tickets for active, veteran and retired service men and women as well as discounted lift tickets for active duty family members with ID on January 26 and 27. While all events take place at Attitash, Wildcat Mountain, located in Pinkham Notch just 20 minutes from Attitash, will also be offering free lift tickets for active, veteran and retired service men and women on January 26 and 27. Saturday, January 26: All are welcome to take part in the special flag parade, led by an honor guard, which begins at the top of Attitash and concludes with the National Anthem at the base area at approximately 1 p.m. Après ski entertainment will take place in Ptarmigan's Pub. Sunday, January 27: Get ready for some fun competition on the slopes in the 4th Annual Battle of the Branches GS Race. Feb 1: Go Red for Women’s Heart Disease at Great Glen Trails: February is heart month! Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer in women? Feb 2: Bretton Woods Disabled Veteran’s Appreciation Celebration: Hosted by Bretton Woods Adaptive Sports & Recreation and the Omni Mount Washington Resort, disabled veterans and their immediate families from the North Country of New Hampshire and Vermont will receive complimentary ski and winter sport lessons, complimentary use of equipment including the use of adaptive equipment through the Bretton Woods Adaptive Program, and lunch. Advanced reservations are required for adaptive lessons and family member passes and rentals. Space is limited so reservations must be made no later than January 31st. February 5, 12, 26: Tuesday Skier/Boarder Suppers at Red Parka Pub: Show your lift ticket or trail pass on Tuesdays at Red Parka Pub and Steakhouse for a special dinner for $15.95. February 8: Portland Symphony Strings KinderKonzerts: Four Seasons: Tomorrow’s weather forecast calls for clear skies, drizzle, sleet, and snow! You can hear different kinds of weather in music – plucking violin strings might make you think of gentle rain while the deep sounds of the double bass may conjure up a thunderstorm! Did you know a composer named Vivaldi wrote music that sounds like the weather? Join the PSO string quintet as they demonstrate how different kinds of weather can be recreated in music. February 10: Hope on the Slopes, Race to Beat Cancer at Cranmore: Whether you’re a recreational skier, a hotshot snowboarder, a downhill racer, a tubing enthusiast, or just want to help in the fight against cancer, you can join the 36th annual event at Cranmore Mountain Resort. Participants gather donations from friends and family and enjoy a fun-filled day on the slopes. All ages and abilities welcome. A NASTAR format ski/snowboard race and timed races for snow tubing. Minimum contribution of $75.00 per participant for those age 18 years and over and $50.00 per participant age 17 years and under. Participants receive an all-day ski or tubing pass to Cranmore. February 9: Attitash Freeride Series: Big Air: Cork it out with nasty grabs and stick the landing to earn points with the judges and take home nice prizes too. Info: www.Attitash.com.
February 14: Red Parka Jr Challenge Cup Race at Attitash: The Red Parka Junior Challenge Cup Race hosted at Attitash is a free race for all middle school ski teams in NH. This is a free race sponsored by Attitash, Frosty's Ski & Snowboard Outlet and The Red Parka Challenge Cup Race. Race starts at 11:00 with awards at 3:00pm. Info: 603-383-4344 or www.redparkapub.com.
February 16: Chairlift Speed Dating at Black Mountain: Black Mountain, will host its annual Chairlift Speed Dating event where you ride the “lift of love” chairlift, with another single. If you hit it off on the ride up you can ski or ride down together…if not you can head back to the lift for another opportunity at meeting your soul or ski mate. The lift of love will be loading participants from 2-4pm on the double chairlift with registration starting at 12:30pm in the main base lodge. Participation is free but a lift ticket or season pass is required to ride the lift. Ticket rates for the Saturday are $49 for adults and $32 for juniors or ½ day rates starting at 12:30pm are $35 for adults and $25 for juniors. In addition to the opportunity to meet your match on the chairlift, we will host a special après event in the Lostbo Pub from 3:30-5:30pm with music from Jon Sarty. There will be special “love potions” being served up including The Love Bug, Absolute Bliss and The Bun Warmer. February 19: Wildcat Kitty Litter Cardboard Box Race: A fun, free, February vacation tradition for kids. Build your own “vessel” out of cardboard boxes and go head-to-head in a series of heats held at the base of Wildcat. Here’s a fun, great way to recycle those old boxes! Info: www.skiwildcat.com.
February 18, 19, 20: Penguins & Polar Bears Ski Camp at Great Glen Trails: Games, challenges and exploration are what this special camp is all about. Both Penguins and Polar Bears are led by the Great Glen Trails Ski School staff and the camp director is Olympian Sue Wemyss. February 23: Family Snow Day at Great Glen Trails: Family Snow Days at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center are low-key, fun-filled days the entire family can enjoy together. And, you get access to all the Snow Day activities for one low price. Cross country ski, snowshoe, snow tube, lessons, scavenger hunt and more! 8:30am - 4:00pm, $45 adults, $30 children (includes lunch). February 24: 24th Annual Chocolate Festival: Cross country ski, snowshoe, or drive between participating trailside businesses to enjoy chocolate treats. More chocolate and special offers await at other area businesses. This is truly the "Sweetest Day on the Trails", perhaps the only day when chocolate indulgence is guilt free. Visit trailside lodging properties and businesses and enjoy a special chocolate treat, meet the owners, and browse their business. Visit every trailside stop and enter a drawing for a $200 gift certificate to be used at any of these businesses. A complimentary shuttle will circulate from 1 - 5pm to provide assistance when needed! A full day trail pass is included in the Festival Pass along with hopefully more chocolate than one can eat. Settle into your chair in the dining room to enjoy a chocolate fondue served with fresh fruit, be sure to add strawberries to top a homemade brownie sundae served with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge, and be sure to sample all of the handmade chocolates you'll find.
