Who says nothing in life is free? Families hoping to travel on a shoestring this summer can find plenty to do in New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington Valley. Not only are there fabulous lodging packages offering everything from economical to luxury accommodations, but even the shopping is more affordable here, as New Hampshire adds no sales tax, so enjoy the 200 or so outlets, gift shops, boutiques, craft and antique shops here too. Playgrounds
Settlers’ Green Outlet Village Plus: Let Mom shop at 50 tax-free outlets while Dad and the kids enjoy hours of climbing and playing on the sturdy equipment. Directions: Settlers’ Green Outlet Village Plus is located on Route 16 in North Conway in the heart of the shopping district. North Conway Community Center: Any summer afternoon you’ll find many children playing at this large playground with swings, a “sprinkler fountain” and much more. Go right next door to Schouler Park and enjoy an afternoon of kite flying or picnicking. Directions: On Route 16 in North Conway Village, next to the Community Center.
Just Plain Fun
Free Concerts: Throughout July and August, enjoy free evening family concerts at Cranmore Resort. Bring a blanket, a picnic and delight fine music. Entitled “Arts Jubilee”, these concerts are scheduled throughout July and August. Visit www.mwvevents.com or click on Calendar of Events on this website for a complete schedule.
Enjoy a nature walk on the self-guided nature trail at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center or Wildcat Mountain.. Directions: Take Route 16 past Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and you’ll find Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center at the Mt. Washington Auto Road, and Wildcat Mountain just about a mile beyond.
Fly a kite on the fields surrounding Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center or in Schouler Park.
Watch fudge being made at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory on Route 16/White Mountain Hwy in North Conway.
Watch The Trains arrive at Conway Scenic Railroad. Visit the train museum to learn more about trains, at either the Conway Scenic Railroad or The Cog Raliway. Directions: Rt. 16/White Mountain Hwy in North Conway Village, or Route 302, Bretton Woods.
Take a Tour Back In Time - The Mt. Washington Hotel offers free tours of this historic hotel, usually at 10am and 3pm to guests and the public. Take a lesson in history by visiting this renowned grand hotel and learn all about the formation of the World Monetary Fund. Visit Weather Discovery Center (almost free - donation required) in North Conway. This is the only museum in the country dedicated to weather. You can experience what it felt and sounded like to be atop Mt. Washington when the highest winds were ever recorded, practice being a meteorologist, or enjoy other hands-on displays explaining the effects of weather. Perfect for the whole family.
Free Clinics and Lectures are offered by the Appalachian Mountain Club, at both Pinkham Notch and the new Highland Center at Crawford Notch.. These include guided hikes, clinics and presentations. You can even pick up a free coloring and activity book for the kids and view interpretive displays at the AMC’s Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. Visit their stores for details, both on Route 16 in North Conway and Intervale, respectively.
Free newspapers are considered the “bibles” among those who wish to learn what’s new in Mt. Washington Valley. The area’s daily paper, The Conway Daily Sun, along with the popular weekly Mountain Ear, both offer a great deal of information on events and news for the region. Additionally, the Mountain Ear publishes a Winter Guide and Summer Guide, offering a compendium of events and more. There are other popular free papers distributed throughout Mt. Washington Valley including the new Northern Light, and Summer or Winter Week. Look for all these papers distributed at businesses throughout town.
