MT WASHINGTON VALLEY COMES ALIVE WITH MUD CHAMPIONSHIPS, SCARECROWS, RACES AND FAMILY FUN, SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER, 2011


North Conway, NH - It's back to school season in the Mt. Washington Valley. Fall foliage season is packed with colorful events adding to Mother Nature's pageantry in the White Mountains. September 9-11: Mud Bowl: The Championship of Mud Football: This three-day mud football tournament featuring 10 teams from throughout New England enjoying good clean fun in Hog Coliseum's knee deep mud. The annual Tournament of Mud Parade on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m., and zany halftime entertainment are highlights along with the double elimination tournament to crown the champions of Mud Football. This year's Tournament of Mud parade theme is "Mud Bowl celebrates TV ComMUDies." All proceeds benefit charities in Mount Washington Valley. September 10 and October 8: AMC Guided Summit Tour & Hike at Wildcat Mountain: Take a tour led by naturalists from the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center followed by a guided hike down from the 4,062 foot summit of Wildcat Mountain. Admission is free, except for cost of a ticket required to ride the Wildcat Express Gondola Skyride to the summit. Info: (603) 466-3326.

September 10: Sunset Soiree: An Enchanted Epicurean Affair on the Northeast's Tallest Peak: The evening will start with a chauffeured twilight drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road for a dessert tasting and champagne toast on the top of the tallest mountain in the Northeast. Next, back down at the bottom, the evening will be followed by a multi-course meal catered by the Thompson House Eatery of Jackson, NH. Tickets to this exclusive fundraiser for the Mount Washington Observatory are $100 and may be purchased online or by phone at (603) 356-2137, ext 230.

September 11: 20th Annual Mt. Washington Valley Old Car Show: This event will be held at Settlers' Green Outlet Village from 9 a.m. to 2p.m. Over 300 cars, trucks, and motorcycles including antique, classic and special interest vehicles compete for cash and trophy awards in 8 categories. A fun day of classic cars for him and shopping for her or vice versa!

September 17 & 18: Railfans Weekend at Conway Scenic Railroad: This year's 37th annual Railfan's Weekend is not only for avid railfans, but the entire family-the event will feature an outdoor Railroadiana flea market, displays of special equipment, collectors' displays, a turn-of-the-last century operating turntable, motorcars, and more! Along with special departures to Sawyer River, Notchland, regular trains to Conway and Bartlett will be in service. For fares and departure times call (603) 356-5251 or log onto conwayscenic.com.

September 17:  Red Parka World Championship Tricycle Race: World Championship Grand Prix Tricycle Racing continues for its' 3rd year at Black Mountain.  Racers compete in head to head slalom format for fame & glory.  All proceeds benefit the Dewey Mark/Red Parka Scholarship Fund.  Individual and Team categories are included.  Registration; $15 per person or $50 for 4 person team.  Tricycles provided, helmets required.  Participants must be 21 years or older.  12:00 registration with a 1:00 start. September 21: 5th Annual Lake Kezar Country Club Senior Open Tournament: This fun tournament is one time when seniors (65-75) will add one stroke to handicap for each year over 65. Super seniors (75+) will add a stroke per year and move to the forward tees. Prizes and cookout to follow, call Kezar Lake Country Club for more information (207) 925-2462.

September 24: 14th Annual Walk in the Park and Bark in the Park: Celebrate an amazing event in North Conway's Schouler Park inspired by all the animals. Registration takes place Friday evening from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Four Your Paws Only or at 8:30 am Saturday morning in the Park. Walk for the Animals begins at 9:15 am. Following the walk, the Bark in the Park event will feature games, agility, demonstrations and other fun events for Fido, Fifi and their masters, beginning at 10 a.m. visit conwayshelter.org for more information or call (603) 447-5955.


September 24 & 25: Fat Tire Festival: Saturday marks the cross country race held at Cranmore Mountain and Sunday is the Tour de Valley group mountain bike ride. For more information on the festival contact the leading sponsors, Red Jersey Cyclery at (603) 356-7520 or online at redjersey.com

September 30-Oct 29 (weekends): The Ghoullog Mountain Top Haunt : This annual haunted Halloween event starts Friday September 30th with a local's special of $21 on September 30th only and continues on weekends through October 29.  Ride the chairlift to experience the haunted abandoned town and be ready for frights and flights of dark fantasy. Take some time for the other attractions at Cranmore before or after your ride including the Haunted Mountain Coaster Ride, the giant swing ride or the Bloody Noose Pub and Outdoor Beer garden. October 1: 15th Annual Fall Festival & Scarecrow Contest at Settlers' Green Outlet Village: Not only will there be homemade scarecrows throughout the mall competing for cash prizes, but free horse-drawn wagon rides, face painting, apple cider & apples, live music and more will highlight the day. Scarecrows will be on display throughout the Halloween season. Event is free and open to the public, call 603-356-7031 ext. 10 for more information or got to settlersgreen.com.


October 1: People: From October 1-20th take a self-guided tour throughout the Mt. Washington Valley to view the creative and innovative Pumpkin People.  The Pumpkin People are works of art (some elaborate) utilizing live pumpkins, and will surely amaze you. "Return of the Pumpkin People" official maps will be available for down load off the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce website on September 1, 2011 until October 20th or you can pick one up at any of the participating businesses after September 15th. October 2-9: The Fryeburg Fair: Maine's Blue Ribbon Classic is the largest agricultural fair in northern New England. Come to the Fryeburg Fair and experience over 160 years of tradition in the making with a wide array of crafts, exhibitions, farm museums, rides, games, parades, animals and the world's largest steer and oxen show. It's an eight-day extravaganza that attracts people from all over the nation to take part in rich traditions of livestock, farming, and Maine life. Saturday, October 8:  10th Annual Bike for Books: Bike for Books is a scenic mountain biking tour of Mt Washington Valley during the height of fall foliage and a fundraiser for the North Conway Public Library Registration fees are $20 for individuals, $35 for couples, $40 for families, and $10 for students 17 and under. Registration forms may be picked up at the North Conway Public Library or download here  Visit northconwaylibrary.com to learn more about the various routes for beginner, intimidate, and experienced bikers.

October 14 - 30: Pumpkin Patch Express at Conway Scenic: Costumes are encouraged as kids ride aboard the Conway Scenic Railroad to the "Pumpkin Patch" at the White Mountain Cider Company where each child kids can pick pumpkins. The Pumpkin Patch Express runs weekends in October starting October 14th with 1:30 departures on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with an additional 3:00 departure on Saturday. October 16: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer North Conway: The annual Brest Cancer walk comes back to North Conway to help local friends and family through their time in need. It's a 3.5 mile noncompetitive walk, where funds are raised to help the American Cancer Society. To make a donation go online to cancer.org/stridesonline.

October 22: Lake Kezar Country Club "Turkey Shoot" Scramble: Win a Thanksgiving turkey or turkey dinners at area restaurants by playing golf! Four-player teams participate in a scramble format. Call for more information and registration at (207)925-2462.

October 29: 3rd Annual Haunted Happenings at Settlers' Green: Settlers' Green Outlet Village is hosting a safe place for parents to take their children Trick-or-Treating for the 3rd year in a row. Don't forget you can shop too! Halloween treats for all costumed characters free to children ages 11 and under while supplies last.
