May marks National Bike Month; mark the calendar for two bike and family friendly events taking place in Mt Washington Valley to help kids learn more about bicycle safety.  Plus, The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week 2010 from May 17-21 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 21, so even adults can get in on the fun and plan to bike for work and play.

MARK THE CALENDARS FOR TWO MAY BICYCLE AND KID-FRIENDLY BIKE EVENTS IN MT WASHINGTON VALLEY

2nd Annual Kids Bike Safety Day at Story Land, May 8

The Mt Washington Valley Velo Club will present the 2nd Annual Kids Bike Safety Day at Story Land in Jackson, NH on May 8 (rain date: May 9).  From 10am - 2:00pm, kids are invited to learn all about bicycle safety and test their skills, while visiting stations located throughout Story Land.  The safety checks and educational stations take about an hour to complete; then the kids are invited to enjoy a complimentary lunch.  Everyone will go home with a goodie bag.

The day starts with a helmet and bicycle safety check offered by skilled mechanics.  Rules of the road will be offered by local police departments, and a variety of other stations will help to reinforce bike safety and skills with a number of exercises and explanations.  Last year close to 200 people attended the event.  This year promises to be another very successful event.

It's all presented by the MWV Velo Club, with help from the Kiwanis Club of Mt Washington Valley and a large pack of volunteers and sponsors.  Additional sponsors are welcomed.  Simply contact Mt Washington Valley Velo Club member Phil Swanson at 986-6389 if you are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor.

Family Fun Bike-a-thon, May 23, 2010

The Mount Washington Valley Bike Path Committee announces its first Family Fun Bike-a-thon on Sunday, May 23rd from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Bike Path Committee, along with the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce and Settlers' Green Outlet Village, will be hosting an afternoon of bike-related activities in the parking lot behind the North Conway Grand Hotel at Settlers' Green in North Conway. Roads and parking lots in that area will be blocked off to allow for traffic-free riding for cyclists of all ages. There will be bike and helmet inspections, a bike parade, a scavenger hunt, bike games, and refreshments. Local bike shops, clubs, and businesses will have booths set up to share information and products. Goody bags will be provided courtesy of Settlers' Green Outlet Village. This event is free for all participants and ample parking is available for those who arrive by car. All cyclists must wear helmets.

The goal of this event is to promote the idea of a bike path in the Mount Washington Valley. The Bike Path Committee wants to share the work its members have been doing for the past year and to enlist community support and enthusiasm for the project. A booth set up at the site will have brochures, maps, and media displays outlining the vision for the bike path and progress made so far. Surveys will be available for people to fill out to help the Committee identify the needs of the community bike riders and pedestrians. Logo Contest entries will be on display.

Mark your calendars for May 23rd for this fun and informative event. Get your bikes ready to ride.
