Mud Bowl 2008 will celebrate a theme of "Mudmerican Bandstand" when the World Championships of Mud Football splash off in North Conway's Hog Coliseum, Friday through Sunday, Sept. 5 through 7.

It's good clean two-hand touch football fun, played in knee deep mud. And while whimsical in theme, the competition is intense with a world championship title at stake.

Spectators will enjoy plenty of yuks in the muck when they come to the games, which will feature pep rallies, the 26th annual Tournament of Mud Parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, the Mud Bowl Ball at Tuckerman's Restaurant & Tavern located at New England Inn Saturday evening, Sept. 6; cheerleader competitions, Imari and the Sahara Desert Belly Dancers of Bridgton, Maine, at halftimes Sept. 6; the world's best synchronized mud swimming, and more mud mania.

Now in its 33rd year in North Conway, the colorful 13-game, double elimination mud football extravaganza includes three days of exciting football action, culminating with the championship Sunday afternoon, Sept. 7.

The Nashua Mud Gumbys of Nashua, N.H., won their third overall World Mud Bowl mud football championship and their second straight at last year's finals in an exciting, double overtime 20-to-18 win over the

2005 world champion North Shore Mudsharks of Beverly, Mass. The Gumbys were undefeated at both the 2006 and 2007 Mud Bowls.

The other six teams from throughout New England that will participate in this year's tourney include the 16-time champion Muddas Football Club of Amherst, N.H., the hometown 11-time champion Mt. Washington Valley Hogs of North Conway, N.H.; the 2001 champion Merrimack Mudcats of Franklin, N.H., the Peabody Predators of Peabody, Mass.; the Carrabassett Valley Rats of Kingfield, Maine; and the Cumberland Muckaneers of Rhode Island.

The family-oriented event benefits local charities, with more than $470,000 having been raised over the years. Patrons may use their admission ticket as their entry in raffle drawings that will be held throughout the weekend. Three-day tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate. Daily tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12. A $15 family pass for two adults and two children is available as well.
