Ten Top Hot Off-The-Slope Adventures for Cool Winter Days in Mt Washington Valley, NH


North Conway, NH - While thirteen ski resorts and XC centers keep skiers busy in Mt Washington Valley, NH, there is plenty of outdoor adventure for those who'd rather spend their time going around the hills rather than up and down them.  With more than 150 lodging properties, 200 boutiques, shops and outlets and 75 restaurants, plus skiing and these wonderful outdoor diversions, it's no wonder that Mt Washington Valley is considered New England's premier winter playground.  This winter, as travelers seek more for their money, Mt Washington Valley simply makes sense, with so many choices for eating, drinking, playing and being merry, plus all these outdoor winter adventures.

Animal Tracking Tours
Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring & Snowshoe Foundation: Search for tracks of winter residents of forest and field and discover the mysteries of what animals do in the winter by interpreting tracks and signs they leave behind during this two hour tour. Snowshoe at an easy pace on gentle terrain along the Saco and East Branch Rivers. Chosen as one of Yankee Magazine's favorite winter activities, this tour will depart from the Touring Center at 10:00 a.m. Reservations and a $20 Event Pass are required. Snowshoe rentals are available at the Touring Center if needed. January 17, 2008 plus other scheduled dates.

Dog Sledding

New England Dogsledding offers rides, sledding and lodging packages in Mt Washington Valley throughout the winter.  Whether it's a one hour ride at Great Glen Trails or a longer ride, this is a fabulous way to experience the outdoors with man's best friend.  "Learn to Mush" packages are also offered, allowing multi-day packages. 

At Purity Spring Resort on February 25, 2009 Sled Dog Race clinics & demo for kids only. Classes at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. Kids must pre-register $20 per child, $10 with lift ticket.  Also
Purity Spring Resort will host to the 2nd annual "Purity Spring Sled Dog Race Classic" on March 8 and 9, 2009. This ISDRA sanctioned event is presented by the New England Sled Dog Club, Inc. Admission to the two-day event is free and rides for kids may be available. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere and affordability, Purity Spring and King Pine Ski Area have been a tradition for families throughout New England for decades.


Sleigh Rides

Farm by the River B&B offers 45 minute winter sleigh ride on 70 scenic acres. All rides depart daily at 10:00 & 11:30 am & 1:00, 2:30, & 4:00 pm. Extended hours on weekends and holiday weeks 5, 6 pm. Rides available upon request with reservation as well.

Ice Climbing 
International Mountain Equipment (IME) and International Mountain Climbing School (IMCS) mark their 35th year offering comprehensive climbing instruction and retail services for climbers from New England and around the country. Programs include:

Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School offers courses that are progressive, so you can add on as many days as you want. Each day you'll start out right where you left off. Snowmobiling
The White Mountain has hundreds of miles of well-groomed snowmobiling trails. Rent a machine, receive instruction, maps and all the gear you need to get you exploring on a self guided tour.

A Lil' Man Snowmobile Rentals in Bartlett offers a large rental fleet and will get you up and onto the trails. Helmet, map and instruction are free.

Fryeburg Snowmobile Rentals is just across the border in Fryeburg, Maine and is well equipped for your journey.  Your snowmobile adventure will begin directly from their location. Helmet, map and instruction are free.


Town And Country
offers rentals, sales, full service workshop open seven days a week in the winter, and a wide array of adult and children's apparel.

Ice Skating
Conway is home of the Ham Arena, an indoor ice skating facility. In addition to public skating, hockey programs and a home to many figure skating clubs for children and adults, Ham Arena also features a pro shop stocked with equipment, sticks, skates and gear.

Snowshoeing and GPS Orienteering
Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Outdoor Explorations are a terrific way for you to try something new or brush up on your skills. Daily and weekend explorations are free for their guests, along with equipment too. Visit them at the Highland Lodge (Crawford Notch) and Joe Dodge Lodge (Pinkham Notch) to learn the basics of snowshoeing from AMC's friendly staff, then try out your new skills on a guided naturalist trip or on your own. Naturalist snowshoe walks and talks at Joe Dodge Lodge take place daily, plus longer snowshoe hikes and cross-country ski tours as scheduled Friday through Sunday. At Highland Lodge, daily activities will include interpretive or skills programs like GPS orienteering, winter ecology, and night-time sights and sounds snowshoe outings, with snowshoe hikes and cross-country ski tours on weekdays and refresher skills clinics for cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing, and snowshoeing on weekends. Snowshoes can be rented at many of the ski areas as well as many local shops, and even some Bed & Breakfasts.  With 770,000 pristine acres of White Mountain National Forest land surrounding Mt. Washington Valley, the snowshoeing opportunities abound in Mt. Washington Valley.

SnowCoach Sightseeing on Mount Washington
Great Glen Trails is home to the SnowCoach, your ticket to Mount Washington's world above treeline. A specially constructed all-wheel drive and unique 4-track system allows the nine-passenger SnowCoach to offer above treeline winter sightseeing. For the adventurer in you, the SnowCoach gives you the option to cross country ski, telemark ski or snowshoe down the Mt Washington Auto Road. SnowCoach tours last approximately 1¼ hours and depart daily, weather permitting, from December through March from Great Glen Trails on a first come, first served basis.
