Janice Crawford picked for 2007 Climate Champion Award

Presentation at Global Warming and Energy Solutions conference

Manchester, NH - Janice Crawford, executive director of the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, has received the 2007 award for individual leadership on climate action from Clean Air - Cool Planet, the leading nonprofit working to find and promote solutions to global warming in the Northeast.

"We chose Janice Crawford for a Climate Champion Award because she exemplifies the personal commitment to increasing education on global warming," said Adam Markham, executive director of Clean Air - Cool Planet (CA-CP).  "She knows climate change threatens the future prosperity of businesses and communities dependent upon our natural resources in the Northeast, and she has worked tirelessly to help prevent it."

Presenting the award at CA-CP's Global Warming and Energy Solutions conference here, Susan Tierney, chair of the group's board of directors, noted that Crawford "contributed to the success of the New Hampshire Global Warming Education Project:

  • by attending and contributing at the very first meeting, in January 2006, that connected the idea of global warming education with the NH primary;
  • by enlisting a UNH professor to write a monthly column on climate impacts for the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber newsletter; and
  • by working to educate the greater Mount Washington Valley community by arranging presentations at meetings of chambers and other civic associations.

"Because of Janice's work, the Mt Washington Valley Chamber is leading by example," noted Roger Stephenson, coordinator of the Carbon Coalition and the Global Warming Education Project.  "We are honored to count you among our partners in education and wholeheartedly agree with your chamber's motto that ‘Anything is Possible'."

The Climate Champion awards are presented every two years at Clean Air - Cool Planet's climate solutions conferences.  Other winners this year include the communities of Maplewood, NJ, and Cambridge, MA, as well as Staples, Inc. and Oakhurst Dairy.
