MT WASHINGTON VALLEY CALENDAR OF EVENTS - JANUARY 2008

With thirteen ski resorts and XC Centers, miles and miles of snowmobiling terrain, plus sledding, ice skating, sleighrides and a packed calendar of events, Mt. Washington Valley offers something for everyone. Early season snow means ski resorts and XC Centers are offeing some of the best conditions ever. Make this the year for a Mt. Washington Valley winter getaway. Here's a peak at the region's packed events calendar.

JANUARY

Every Monday: Waxing Demonstration at JSTF - The Jackson Ski Touring Foundation will host a waxing demonstration every Monday at 9:30 a.m. Find out the latest info from getting started to race fine tuning. Every Tuesday: Tuesday Trekkers at JSTF - Like Friday Gliders but for snowshoers. Program goes January 8 - March 11, 2008. Enjoy a fun and social trek to explore the forest followed by refreshments by the fire. Participants will experience many wondrous winter things along the way. Every Tuesday: Nordic Meister Weekly Series at Great Glen Trails - Great Glen Trails hosts its weekly Nordic Meister recreational race series for skate/classic skiers of all ages and abilities every Tuesday through March 4. Participants will compete on the same 5 km course week after week, and they can show up any time between 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. to do it. Prizes for competitors who complete six out of eight weeks are based on a raffle at the end of the series awards party. Info: 603-466-2333 or www.greatglentrails.com. Tuesdays and Thursdays: Easy Sliders at JSTF - This program is a gentle introduction to cross country skiing and winter fitness for people who want to exercise but don't quite know how to begin. Open to absolute beginners on Tuesdays and Thursdays running January 4 through March 13. Each one hour instruction and gentle practice session starts at 10:30 followed by refreshments by the fire in the base lodge. Rate is $10 for each session including rentals (for the session period only). Every Friday: Friday Gliders Classic Social Ski at JSTF - On Fridays, through March 14, the Friday Gliders Classic Social Ski with Marianne Borowski will be held at 1 p.m. Very fun and social with instructional tips along the way. Fridays and Saturdays: Guided Naturalist Skiing and Snowshoe Tours at Bear Notch - The Bear Notch Ski Touring Center in Bartlett will host special guided naturalist skiing and snowshoe tours on Fridays and Saturdays at 11 a.m. throughout the winter. Info: 603-374-2277 or www.bearnotchski.com.

Every Saturday: Weekly Cranapalooza at Cranmore - Cranmore introduces an evening festival for families and friends every Saturday from January through March 6. Between the hours of 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. enjoy live music, terrain park competitions, face painting, clowns, fireworks and other activities that will vary from week to week. Every Saturday: Children's Après Ski Parties at Bretton Woods - Kids aged 4-12 are invited to join in this après ski party just for them, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Saturday evening through March 15. Every Saturday: Snowshoe Instructional Nature Tour - Jackson Ski Touring offers a guided nature tour every Saturday from 10 a.m. to Noon. January 4-6: Future Chefs Winter Festival at the Mt. Washington Resort - This event features four talented junior culinary teams from New Hampshire at Saturday's gala dinner and reception. January 5: Nordic Skier Demo Day at JSTF - The Nordic Skiers Sports Shop at Jackson Ski Touring will host a Demo Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with equipment by Atomic, Fisher, Karhu and Salomon, snowshoes by Tubbs, boots by Salomon and Fischer, poles by Swix and test Swix waxes. January 6: 4th Annual Great Penguin Race at Cranmore - Hundreds of identical little rubber penguins will race down the slopes of Cranmore. Penguins can be purchased for $5 each. January 12: CCSAA's Winter Trails Day at Bretton Woods Nordic Center - CCSAA's national day of getting outdoors! Winter Trails Day offers children and adults new to snow sports the chance to try snowshoeing and cross country skiing for free, and to discover the great fitness and social benefits with these easy-to-learn winter sports. January 12: Diana Golden Series Level 1 Adaptive Race at Bretton Woods - The Golden Cup Series memorializes US and World Champion skier Diana Golden and is intended to promote the sport of ski racing to disabled athletes on the East coast. Level I racing is for everyone; any person with a disability may participate. Racers do not need to have any prior racing experience. January 14: 13th Annual Great Ice Carvers of NE Invitational Competition at the Wentworth Inn - Twelve competitors will be given three hours to transform and carve a three hundred pound block of ice using the tools of their choice. January 19: Hearthside Dinner at Remick Museum - The dinners are cooked entirely on the open hearth using historic recipes. January 25 - 27: Seventh Annual Snow Sculpting Competition in Jackson -Weather permitting, the Seventh Annual New Hampshire Snow Sculpting Competition will be held this weekend in Jackson Village. Competitive sculpting will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and continue through most of the weekend.
